For my children

I didn’t know I was making mistakes

Because half the time

I had no idea what I was doing

And the rest I was barely awake.

But I remember the stabs of brilliance,

The shafts of silliness,

The moments of glory and the respites

From the horror of it all.

That’s what I do recall,

When I recall

Anything at all.

Just the love.

Because that’s what gets you through.

And without all these mistakes

We’d not be who we are now.

We’d not be here, or who we are,

Regrets, I’ve made a few, but,

They’d take too long to mention…
