We are only allowed a limited time with the animals who become part of our families, and our only true responsibility is to make that time as wonderful as possible for them. It’s never easy to let go, however, even when it’s the right time.

We have been blessed to have a dog who has had such an effect on so many people’s lives, apart from our own. I know I am bound to think this, but Smith has… had one of the sweetest natures of any dog, or any creature at all, humans included. He was daft, outgoing and as gentle and caring as it’s possible to imagine. We grew to accept that people came to see him rather than us from quite early on, and he was always ready to try new things, be that guest appearances on our local radio station, or his often busy social media presence. He was always happiest meeting people and hanging out with his innumerable friends. Any of us might wish to be as universally loved as he was.

If someone was sad or unwell, he was first one there to offer comfort and healing smells, and always knew when someone needed some extra love. I am…
